Alinta Energy has welcomed the designation of the proposed Cataby Power Station as a Western Australian Priority Project.
Cataby Power Station is proposed to generate up to 500 MW of flexible, fast-start gas generation, responding quickly when renewable output is low to help keep electricity reliable for Western Australian homes and businesses.
Alongside the designation, Alinta Energy has signed an agreement with global energy technology company, Everllence, to supply the reciprocating engine technology for the proposed project. The agreement secures access to critical long-lead equipment while development and approvals continue.
Alinta Energy's Head of Power Development, West Coast, Linden Blair, said both announcements reflected the Cataby project’s growing importance to Western Australia's energy future.
"The Priority Project designation recognises Cataby project’s potential to support Western Australia's future energy needs, including supplying around 10 per cent of peak demand in the state's main electricity grid.
Realising that potential requires early and robust planning. Our agreement with Everllence helps secure access to critical equipment while we continue to work through the approvals process.
We’re targeting Q4 2029 to begin operations at Cataby Power Station, subject to approvals.”
