We’ve reached an important milestone for the proposed Cataby Power Station, with the project's Environmental Referral now submitted to the Environmental Protection Authority.
The submission marks the start of the formal environmental assessment process and is a key step in progressing the project through the approvals pathway. Before the power station can be developed, a range of approvals are required, with relevant agencies and other stakeholders providing input throughout the process.
If approved, the Cataby Power Station will support Western Australia’s energy transition. The station will generate up to 400 MW of electricity and respond quickly to changes in demand, providing reliable power when renewable energy generation is low.
The proposed power station will supply enough electricity to meet approximately 10 per cent of peak demand in Western Australia’s electricity grid. It'll help keep the lights on by filling gaps in renewable generation, supporting grid stability and maintaining reliable electricity supplies as coal-fired generation retires.
At this initial stage of the Environmental Impact Assessment process, comment is simply sought on whether or not the EPA should assess a proposal and, if so, what level of assessment is considered appropriate. The Environmental Referral is currently open for public comment regarding the level of assessment required from 8–14 July 2026.
