Development Application submitted for Cataby Power Station

We've submitted a Development Application for the proposed Cataby Power Station, marking an important step forward for the project.

The application has been lodged through the Significant Development Assessment Unit, which will coordinate the planning approvals and consultation process. The application brings together the project’s environmental studies, technical design and community feedback, and marks the start of the formal planning assessment process.

It’s been lodged under Part 11B Significant Development Pathway in recognition of its role in supporting Western Australia’s energy transition.

If approved, the Cataby Power Station will be a fast-start gas facility designed to provide reliable, on-demand electricity to support Western Australia’s South West Interconnected System. The project will:

• Reliably deliver up to 400MW of power, equivalent to approximately 10% of peak demand in the main WA electricity grid
• Be available around the clock and ready to generate when needed
• Help maintain grid stability and reliability as coal-fired generation retires
• Develop a benefit sharing program in consultation with the local community

The proposed site is located near Mimegarra Road in the Shire of Dandaragan, within an existing industrialised area with access to gas supply and transmission infrastructure. Subject to approvals, the power station is targeting to commence construction in 2027. 

The Significant Development Assessment Unit will determine the timing and duration of the public consultation period. Once these details are confirmed, we'll provide a further update.
